Nothing Good Happens in Slaughterhouses

There is not a single ingredient in the lives or bodies of other animals, or in the products of their bodies such as dairy and eggs, that we cannot get from a plant or other non-animal source. We can live healthy, happy lives, without including other animals in our diet or for any other use such as clothing, furniture, personal care items, labour, entertainment or any other use.

We use other animals for trite reasons of taste, convenience and habit.

As a consequence of our behaviour, each one of the billions of individuals we use, trillions of individuals in the case of sea life, faces a violent, premature death that none of us would wish to experience.

Our billboard illustrates that other animals are feeling beings with minds. When we harm them, they experience terror, pain and suffering. We acknowledge that it is not common in Ireland to slaughter pigs as young as the piglet featured on this billboard. That does not vitiate the terror they experience when they are slaughtered at less than one year old, or as adults once they have been used for the purposes of breeding.

That said, a number of outlets in Ireland sell ‘suckling pig’, a baby pig who is slaughtered at two to six weeks of age, while they are still suckling milk from their lactating mothers.

However, the purpose of our ad is not to discuss the slaughter age of pigs, or even to discuss the pig flesh industry. We aim to show that other animals are feeling beings and to confront the non-vegan public with the injustice of the pain we put them through, and the enjoyment of their lives that we take from them, when we use them as our resources. Once people begin to question their habits and speciesism, it is highly likely that acknowledging sentience in pigs will extrapolate to all animal use.
